Medicare’s Chronic Disease Dental Care

Did you know that you may be eligible to receive Medicare assistance for dental services?  That’s right. If you receive a referral from a GP fitting certain criteria, Medicare will pay benefits up to $4,250 for dental care over two years under the Chronic Disease Dental Scheme. Under this scheme, Medicare benefits are available for most services provided by a dentist, dental specialist or dental prosthetist in private dental surgeries.

To be eligible, your oral health must have an impact on, or be likely to impact on, your general health, and you must have a chronic medical condition and complex care needs.

A chronic medical condition is one that has been present or is likely to be present for at least six months. This may include asthma, cancer, cardiovascular illness, diabetes mellitus, arthritis, mental illness, musculoskeletal conditions and stroke.

Complex care needs refers to ongoing care required from a multidisciplinary team, including your GP and at least two other health or care providers.
